The Road Not Taken
The road traveled, though seemingly less so at our start, is our path. The road not taken is our focus.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood / And sorry I could not travel both / And be one traveler
When faced with choices, we can make only one. We are, each of us, only one person.
long I stood / And looked down one as far as I could / To where it bent in the undergrowth
Decisions take time, and we can only see so far into the future.
Then took the other, as just as fair, / And having perhaps the better claim / Because it was grassy and wanted wear
One choice always emerges as better than the other.
Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same / And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black.
But they are equal until the travel begins.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
We can venture forth with the intention to change course should the choice prove incorrect.
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
But we change in our travels, through our experiences, and the other path changes with us, with time, with knowledge.
I doubted if I should ever come back.
We cannot go back. Our perspective has changed. We are changed, different, grown.
I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence
We will tell our story of the path we chose.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, / I took the one less traveled by
We took the road less traveled and made it the road traveled by our travelling.
And that has made all the difference.
Dwell not on the road not taken, and peace will take you safely along the road you travel.

It really is. It’s changed for me over the years. I used to hold fast to the interpretation that taking “the road less traveled” means you are following your own path and not the path of the masses, but not anymore. Now I see it as a poem of choices and regret, and that you can’t regret “the road not taken” in order to fully appreciate “the road less traveled”.

Sounds like you are traveling the road to peace, Melanie. I love your re-interpretation of this poem. Yes, we need to stop regretting the road not taken. Great reminder.
Right before reading your post I came across a quotation that seems to fit perfectly, “What seems to be in the way IS the way.”~David Richo.
Thank you for this roadmap to peace. {{{hugs]}} Kozo

I’m working on it. Peace is allusive when regret is present.
I like that quote. It’s fitting, and a great reminder of the positive to my struggles with the road I took. Thank you!
{hugs} back to you!

When I was graduating high school, my dad put this poem on my senior page. Unfortunately, the yearbook staff were idiots, and it came out “the road less traveles by”. In my head, it has morphed over the years, and I have begun to wonder if I am still taking the same road as Les.

Too many people do think the poem is “the road less traveled”, but that yearbook staff took it to a whole new level. lol.

It’s hard not to think about the roads we’ve traveled, and not traveled.
