Read Me Writing, 3 (and Selfie Sensation)

Lesson 2: Doing the basics brilliantly

No one sits down at a computer or with a notebook and magically create clear, compelling copy. It might look like that’s what they’re doing, but that’s only because they’ve internalized the approach we’re about to describe. No, going from nothing to something is a four-stage process during which you research, plan, write, and review.

I already follow that plan, but getting back to basics was my goal for running through the lessons of Read Me. 10 Lessons for Writing Great Copy.

Workout

Plenty of real-world copywriting isn’t writing at all, it’s editing and reworking existing text. …redraft the following chunk of copy–taken from a fictional airline print ad …. Feel free to add and subtract details as you see fit. The aim is to build your confidence working with existing text, not scrupulously stick to the source material.

  1. These are great! I especially love #1 and #2. I don’t know what my personal tag line is. I’d have to give it some thought. But I remember when I was working on my master’s of public health degree, we had to create short taglines that got the message out in the fewest words possible. Kind of like STD-risk in nine words or less. Was both challenging and fun. 🙂

    • My mom might vote for the same epitaph for me too. After two decades of a nomadic lifestyle, I just, for the first time I think, signed a lease renewal for the second time to go into a third year with the same address. I may have to move next year because I think the roots might be growing. Though I’ve yet to put up an international address…

      • Oh, I think in your case ‘Nomad’ is much more romantic. I was thinking more along the lines of stuff from one drawer to the closet, from the closet to the bike, the bike to the Goodwill bin. Far less romantic, for sure!

        • I might have to agree in comparison (ignoring that you live abroad which is way cooler than any move I’ve made), though the habit of saving cardboard boxes is one I don’t mind breaking.

  2. Loved the first two in particular, but I have to admit I’m still smitten with your grilling tag line. Grilling in boots really does say it all. It doesn’t even matter what you’re grilling. Unless it’s tofu burgers…

    • I’m still happy with my grilling tagline too. I have no plans to change it. I like that I ignore that which most people notice. “I’m grilling in a dress” because everyone seems to notice the boots.
