James and Sarah stared out over the water, the only noise the pigeons’ coo. Content in the company, Sarah eventually broke the silence.
“You know,” she said. “I swam to that island once.”
“Really?”
“I was sitting here minding my own business and this rabid pigeon comes at me for my sandwich. I had no choice but to dive in the lake and swim for my life.”
James smiled, shook his head, and turned to Sarah.
“You might actually have,” he said.
“Nope. But I would.”
“I have no doubt.” They kissed, held hands, and watched the water some more.

A rabid pigeon – cute idea. Nice portrayal of a peaceful moment and a close relationship. I’m a great believer in the power of companionable silence.

I think Sarah might tend towards a but of exageration, and it was fun to imagine. And I agree about the silence. It’s a wonderful thing to have.

Again, you’ve really painted a vivid picture and captured a distinct feeling with a handful of words. Well done, and can we just talk about how frightening birds can be when they get aggressive? Like if you’ve ever been around an angry goose at the park or walked up on a mean chicken, they are really terrifying.

My son and I once had to run from a goose. He was 4 and took off yelling “run for your life!” It was cute once we were safe. Crazy, scary birds. 🙂

A rabid pigeon! Yikes, run…or swim, in this case. I certainly would dive in the lake if that thing were after me. Fun story, Melanie.

Crazy birds are scary. I’d do anything to get away from one of those. 🙂
