Friday Fictioneers is a weekly blog link-up led by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields at Addicted to Purple. The Challenge – write a one hundred word (plus or minus) story with a beginning, middle, and end inspired by the picture*. The Key – make every word count.
The picture is worth a thousand words. Below are my one hundred.

Demolition Day
Sue shook her head and said no a hundred times over, her dreams demolished like half of the building.
Joe, her not-so-trusted agent, said, “You said sight-unseen wasn’t a problem.”
“I thought it would look more like the pictures.”
“You agreed to as-is.”
“I expected as-is to be intact.”
“Your unit is fine,” Joe said. “Structurally sound. Hardly any dust.”
Sue stood almost still—arms crossed, lips pursed, eyes narrowed—shifting weight from right foot to left. A wind whipped a leaf down the sidewalk.
“I suppose you’ll be negotiating on rent,” Sue said.
“I suppose I will,” said Joe.

100 words. Fiction, and I hope it stays that way. I am moving. To another state. In a month. I may be signing my new lease at this very moment. I have not seen this house. I’ve seen it, but I have not seen it. I’ve seen pictures. I know square footage and floor plan. I’ve driven Google Street View. There’s a lake across the street. I’ve mapped the neighborhood. I’ve checked out its walkability. I’ve researched its life. I have stalked this house. This is not the first time I have done this. I will curse the day if this house isn’t what the internet has given me.

This is a fun piece. Although not so fun for Sue, I guess. Nicely written!

Not so fun for Sue, no. But lots of potential, or headaches…
Thanks!

Interesting that he would be expected to live in such a building. Beautiful muriel though, isn’t it?

And that she took it! I would fall into a heap of tears.
It is a beautiful mural. At least there’s that. 🙂

“Hardly any dust” is a weak selling point. Very fun piece.

Great conversation, realistically done.
I feel as though I know Joe, he is so of a type.
Loved this.

Joe is a type. I’ve met a few, though they were a Tom, or a Steve, or or or…

Very interesting picturing. Like mankind demolishing nature our very own home. Destructive destroying.

Dear Melanie,
There’s ‘as is’ and then there’s ‘as is.’ Well done.

‘As is’ held both meanings for these two. 🙂 Thank you Rochelle!

Oh, scary to rely on pictures, Melanie. I may have to move, too, but not out of my town. Anyway, I’ve been seeing pics of homes on the Internet and then seeing them in person, and often the pictures in real life are very accurate. I hope that’s helpful for you! 🙂 I hope it all goes smoothly. Moving is a stressful thing. Good luck!

If I wasn’t moving out-of-state, I wouldn’t go the pictures-only route. It should be fine, but…you never know. 🙂 Good luck to you too with looking and (maybe) moving.

I agree. If you can look at the place, that’s the best. Hope everything goes well for you!

How brave you are, to buy a house like that. I hope it turns out as you wish. I love the story, very funny.

Thanks! I’m renting, not buying. I think that makes it easier. If it’s awful, it’s only a year. 🙂

Great dialogue, and I love the description of the stillness, and the little details of her movements, as the shock sinks in. And the leaf – wonderful. I hope all goes well with your move. We’ve been shifting about more than usual ourselves, in recent years. No fun.

No fun is right! I hope this move has some staying power.
