I’m grilling in a dress, what more do you need to know?

But since you’re here, Welcome! It’s a warm day, so come on in. There are ears ripe for picking, so take a treat home with you. Keep in mind, this is my corn and you people are guests in my corn, so I expect everyone will act accordingly. The stalks can break, and that’s no good for anyone. Have some cider. Enjoy yourself. Take a look around and make yourself at home.

“It’s okay, honey. I… I was just talking to the cornfield.” Ray Kinsella, Field of Dreams

AboutCorn

When I would get sick as a kid, and have to stay home from school, Mom always rented movies. Most of the early years were filled with requests for The Neverending Story. Over and over and over. I was a reader regularly relinquishing reality for the adventures in books.

But then I got too big for all that childish stuff, I was 12 afterall, and, in an attempt to give her daughter something grown-up that still managed to pass her parental controls, I fell in love with Shoeless Joe Jackson, baseball fields in the middle of corn fields, and quintessentially American adventures.

Field of Dreams has remained my favorite movie. And, no, you cannot use this declaration to answer any security questions to pilfer my passwords. Everyone knows I love this movie; it’d be a stupid security question to use.

But this little space isn’t about the movie, baseball, or security questions, though I might talk about movies, baseball, and security questions.

I picked this name and tagline for several reasons. Or a couple. Maybe a few. Or just one.

I sat down and plotted what it was I wanted out of this blog. I wanted to be able to create, to write, to opine, and to be funny, or at least funny looking. I wanted general and I wanted my unique oddness to be a part of it.

I thought and I thinked and I thunk. What is my favorite book? What is my favorite music? What is my favorite movie? What would be a reflection of me?

My answer came from my favorite movie: Field of Dreams. That’s what I wanted from this, an open field to dream. I watched the movie (again) and wrote out my favorite quotes, and near the end I wrote and hit on exactly what I would name this space: “That’s my corn out there. You guys are guests in my corn.

Born: This is My Corn. You people are guests in my corn. This movie is full of quotable quotes, and I found I had an abundance for filling out the theme and widgets with Dreams appropriate thievery. Everything fell into place.

Plus the added bonus of corn being one of the single most versatile crops grown in the United States, the fact that I was born and raised in the Midwest, and that corn is just a funny funny word. Corn. Corny. Cornball. Corndog. Ha! Corn. Say it enough and it no longer sounds like a real word.

  1. I really like the way you think and your taste in films! I’ve seen “Field of Dreams” more times than I can remember and I still get choked up when Ray says “Dad, do you want to have a catch?” Plus Amy Madigan is priceless. Thanks for allowing me to hang out in your corn. I promise to be careful of the stalks.😊

    • Thank you Nancy!
I love that “catch” scene. The other one that always gets me in the feels is when Doc steps off the field to save Karen.
Thanks for coming to the corn field. Don’t worry about the stalks, they’re hardy. 🙂
