Weekly Photo Challenge: Afloat – “How do you interpret the word afloat? … This week, show us what afloat means to you.”
*****
Spring in the South comes in an instant, and it announces itself with a burst. Trees explode. A yellow, or is it green?, powder pollutes every surface. Clouds erupt with thunder and surge rains. The puddles fill and the winds whirl, and then the sun returns and lights the pollen as it swirls afloat.

Really neat picture Melanie. I vaguely remember studying the movement if pollen grains in water – I think it is called Brownian movement ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motion ).There are some cool moving examples in this article.

Thanks Paul! And thanks for the education. That was a cool article. Way above my head, but it’ll come in handy someday for trivia. 🙂

You live in an area where there are a lot of evergreens? I just wondered, as I have friends who lived in the Atlanta area and described the pines and their “showers of yellow.” Love your picture, too!

I’m in Atlanta. Every spring the pines cover everything with their pollen. Nothing outdoors is safe from it.
